The moon is often considered to rule the senses and emotions. Within the Tarot particularly the moon is an archetype for the fickle and changeable. Furthermore, the moon's phases are often connected with female attributes. The phases feature references to the Maiden, the Mother, the Matron, and the Crone. However the changable nature of the Moon with easily identifiable phases is also a constant of the human experience and one of the first steps in our evolution of understanding and our place in the universe.

The Moon serves as an illumination in the darkness, and helps us track the passing of time, we can accurately predict the moon phase and have been able to do so for thousands of years, so the moon can represent emotional and spiritual growth and journeys, and also the emergence of understanding.

The moon can also be associated with deeper abstract concepts. For instance, the moon is known for its close link to mystique and fantasy. This link can be observed in tribal folklore all over the world.
