Lavender is both a light shade of purple and a sweet smelling, flowering plant whose flowers range in color from deep purple to white or pink.
Lavender is a symbol of devotion.
Like other shades of purple, lavender was used in 19th century Britain for "light" mourning. Black would be worn and used to identify those in mourning for a close loved one. Lavender and other shades of purple were used after the initial period of mourning or by people who were less closely related.
