History and legend[]

Legend has it that the stunning amaryllis associated with holidays began as a shy nymph. This nymph fell deeply in love with Alteo, a shepherd with unbelievable strength and beauty. But, her affection was not returned. Amaryllis, hoping she could bring Alteo the thing he desired the most, searched for advice from the oracle of Delphi. Alteo wanted a flower that had never existed in the world before.

After the advice was taken, Amaryllis dressed in maiden's white and appeared at Alteo's door for thirty nights. Every night she pierced her heart with a golden arrow. Finally, Alteo opened his door, and before him was a striking crimson flower. This flower is said to have come from the blood of Amaryllis' heart.
