An allegory is similar to a metaphor, in that something abstract is spoken of in terms of something that is concrete. It is often used in poetry and related to religion.

The Pilgrim's Progress

Perhaps the most famous prose allegory in English is The Pilgrim's Progress. Its central character is named Christian. He was born in the City of Destruction and sets out for the Celestial City. On his journey, he passes through the Slough of Despond and Vanity Fair. He meets men named Pliable and Obstinate. (and so on...)
